Logotipo Noticia Prensa IFEMA

Madrid is to hold the European Society for Medical Oncology Congress (ESMO 2014). Bringing together 18,000 delegates from 26 to 20 September 2014, the meeting will be the biggest international medical congress ever organised in the Spanish capital and will establish our city as a preferred destination for international scientific associations.

Some 60,000 to 80,000 overnight stays are estimated for the congress, which is to take place at IFEMA, an affiliate body to the Madrid Convention Bureau (MCB). Its economic impact on Madrid will be big, possibly exceeding €50 million, if we bear in mind the organisation’s expenses and the money that participants will be spending. Madrid is the chosen venue for this congress thanks to the bid presented by the MCB.

IFEMA's international capacity to hold big professional events is enhanced. Most recently the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) has chosen IFEMA to hold the 39th ESMO Congress of European Oncology between 26 and 30 September 2014. This is one of the most prestigious medical oncology events held on an international level.

The organisers of the congress, which is held in European capitals on a rotating basis in even-numbered years, have opted for Madrid because of the growing importance in Spain of various cancer research institutes and prestigious oncologists who are making a decisive contribution towards raising cancer research to the highest level.

They recognised the capacity of IFEMA and the Feria de Madrid site to hold and run an event of this kind, which will attract more than 16,000 participants from all over the world and have a major impact on the city's economy. The hotel industry alone has received bookings for 50,000 overnight stays during the 4 days of the congress.

The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) is Europe's leading professional body promoting research into the treatment of cancer. It has been involved in this task since it was founded in 1975.

ESMO's main goals include working to improve the quality of the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and palliative care of cancer; achieve greater recognition of oncology; raise patient and public awareness of oncology; educate and train personnel involved in the clinical care of cancer and cancer research; and facilitate equal access to the best treatment for all cancer patients.
